Getting Ready for School: Mastering Math Skills at Home

Maybe your little one is heading back to class in person. Maybe they’ll be learning online. Or maybe they’ve got a few years to go before heading off to school. No matter where your mini-me is in the back-to-school spectrum, building the foundation for solid math skills is critical to your child’s academic success. And practicing those skills at home is a great way to ensure comprehension and build math confidence. But what to work on when? And how to make it fun? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered with a skills-by-age chart to use as a guideline and some easy, at-home activities you can do with supplies you’ve already got. And don’t worry if your child isn’t quite ready to tackle any of these activities – kids learn at their own pace and a little love and support is all they need to get where they’re going!
Many Three-Year-Olds Are Practicing:
- Counting from 1-10
- Creating groups of up to 5 objects
- Showing their age using their fingers
- Naming basic shapes
- Sorting and matching objects by shape and color
CATERPILLAR COUNTING CARDS
Provide some at-home counting practice with a set of sweet caterpillar counting cards you make yourself using pom poms, paint, and markers!
Many Four-Year-Olds Are Practicing:
- Counting from 1-20 in order
- Creating groups of up to 10 objects
- Attempting to write numerals 1-10
- Solving simple addition and subtraction problems using up to 5 objects
- Continuing a three-part pattern, eg: red, yellow, yellow, red, yellow, yellow)
ADDITION WITH DESIGN & DRILL BOLTS
Construct a solid math foundation and introduce the concept of addition and subtraction the fun way, with colorful bolts and a handheld, kid-friendly drill!
Many Five-Year-Olds Are Practicing:
- Counting from 1-30 in order
- Counting backwards from 10
- Completing simple addition problems using their fingers
- Determining the larger of two numbers
- Determining which number is greater than or less than another

Many Six-Year-Olds Are Practicing:

- Simple fractions using apples, oranges, and pizza slices as examples
