Change it Up! The Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach

This past month, Brent’s goal was to raise money for The Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach for the Change It Up! program, where each month an employee chooses a worthy organization for which to fundraise and collect spare change.For 73 years, The Boys & Girls Club of Long Beach's mission is to provide at-risk children, ages 6-18, with accessible after-school educational assistance and mentorship, ensuring that every child sees their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The club provides:- Trained professionals that connect the youth with positive adult mentors and role models.
- Nationally recognized programs to help young people succeed in school, stay healthy, learn important life skills, pursue interests in the arts and sports, and explore vocational choices.
- A wide range of activities and opportunities to give back to the community, set goals, and meet new friends.

Change It Up! The Heart of Ida
This past month, Jessie made it her goal to raise funds for The Heart of Ida for the Change It Up! program, where each month an employee chooses a worthy organization for which to fundraise and collect spare change. EI matches up to $100 in support of the effort.The Heart of Ida is a non-profit organization that serves the older adult population in and around Long Beach, CA. Their daily mission is to help older adults preserve independence as long as possible, and provide comfort and cheer when assisted living is necessary. Also a resident of Long Beach, Jessie connected to the organization because “the idea of being old and lonely is heartbreaking.”The organization helps to facilitate these programs:1. Safe at Home: Nationally, one-third of people over 65 and half of those over 80 will fall each year. Safe at Home volunteers visit clients to perform a multi-point safety check, make repairs, and refer a licensed professional.2. Operation Holiday Hearts: This seasonal program brings cheer to older adults residing in board and care homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Every December, volunteers deliver personal hygiene kits, among other items, to seniors in need in Long Beach, CA.Find out how you can help Jessie donate to Heart of Ida, HERE.

With a deep passion for dance and great taste in music, it made sense for Chrissy to support transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project for the Change It Up! program, where each month an employee chooses a worthy organization for which to fundraise and collect spare change. Based in San Diego, CA, transcenDANCE Youth Arts Project is an organization that empowers culturally diverse youth to mobilize social change through performing arts. Participants go through intensive technical dance, theatre training, and community-building leadership activities with the goal of creating public performances that address complex social issues that affect their community. Working Fine Motor Skills Earlier we discussed gross motor skills, so it’s only fair that we talk about fine motor skills. So what are they? Fine motor skills refer to the small movements of the hands, wrists, fingers, feet, toes, lips, and tongue.
During infancy, fine motor movements remain unconscious reflex actions. Baby’s grips are clumsy and everything they touch usually ends up in their mouths. It isn’t until they reach about 12 months that they begin to master the pincer grip, an important fine motor skill that develops the ability to hold objects between the thumb and index finger.Fine motor skills are largely developed during toddlerhood and preschool. Toddlers begin to develop the abilities to twist dials, pull strings, turn pages, use crayons, and much more. By the time they reach preschool, they are challenged with more delicate tasks like tying shoelaces.Unlike gross motor skills, which call for boundless energy, fine motor skills require patience, which is in shorter supply. It’s crucial that you encourage the development of fine motor skills in your child’s life. Weakness in fine motor skills can affect their ability to eat, write legibly, turn pages in a book, or even dress and groom themselves.Educational Insights has a few early skill development toys and games specifically designed to strengthen these crucial skills. The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game!™ is one in particular that helps children develop fine motor skills while learning to match colors and count.
